Players from 'Tier 2' nations playing in Europe (2015/2016)

image_thumb31

For the 2015/16 season there are right now around 354 players from 31 nations outside Tier 1 playing for clubs in the 5 fully professional leagues in Europe (Premiership, Championship, Top 14, Pro D2 and Pro12), plus at least another 50+ in Espoirs squads in France. Here is a breakdown country by country of those players.

Note: This list needs to be considered with the following in mind. This is just a list of players who were either (a) born in the country or (b) represented the country at any level and (c) made their senior first team debut at club level for any club.

It doesn't include all eligible players as it would be impossible to know every single potentially eligible player, for example last year nobody knew Richard Thorpe was Canadian qualified.

It also doesn't include players who have represented another nation, like Tim Visser (Dutchman who plays for Scotland), Vincent Debaty (Belgian who plays for France) or Semesa Rokoduguni (Fijian who plays for England) for example.

This list also may not be complete, particularly in regards to Espoirs in France where most clubs do not provide squad lists. There's a pretty comprehensive list of Georgian Espoirs, but not so for most other nations. There are likely many Espoirs missing, particularly from Fiji, of which I could only find about 15 but it would not be surprising if there considerably more. It is only really in France where young overseas players are signed aged around 18-21 for Espoirs squads.

Espoirs: There are at least a further 19 Georgians in Espoirs squads in France. That is largely due to the fact that the U20 side that dominated the World Rugby U20 Trophy this year was soon raided by French clubs. 12 forwards from that squad now have contracts in France, although only Melikidze (Stade Français) as of yet has made his first team debut.
Notes: Natriashvili is only a medical joker at Toulon. There are strong rumours circling that scrum half Vasil Lobzhanidze may sign for Brive. Val Rapava Ruskin, former U20 player for Georgia, has said he wants to stay eligible for England for the moment.

Espoirs: There are at least over a further 15 Fijians in Espoirs squads in France, however that is only the very minimum estimate, there are certainly many more.
Notes: Saulo is at Toulon as a medical joker and is set to join Toulouse next season. Hughes previously captained Fiji 'A' but now is waiting to become eligible for England next year. Qovu has been exiled from the national team since pulling out of a squad 'injured' in 2012 only to resurface for his club a week later. Nacewa is just on a short term deal from retirement with Leinster. Bulumakau is way off ever being selected for Fiji and is aiming to play for Scotland 7s. Contrary to some reports that he may be the next Noa Nakaitaci and play for France, Tuisova has actually already played 7s for Fiji and stated he wants to play for them.

Espoirs: Lacky Lee (hooker, Clermont), Paul Ah Him (centre, Brive) are at least two Samoan Espoirs in France, there may well be more.
Notes: Perez is a medical joker at Toulouse. There are many more New Zealand born Samoan eligible players not on this list that could still play for Samoa in the future.

Espoirs: Toma Taufa (tighthead, Bayonne), Nikola Latuhoi (lock, Provence) are at least two Tongan Espoirs in France, there may well be more.
Notes: Filise was stated as joining Merthyr after the RWC but seems to be still sticking round Cardiff. There are more New Zealand born Tongan eligible players in Europe (eg Ben Tameifuna) not listed here who could potentially still play for Tonga in the future.
